The haplord chromosome numbers of n = 9, 10, 11, 12, 18, 20, 23, 25 ± 1, 27, 30, and 33 have been reported by various authors from 26 of the 37 recognized species of Melampodium. A chromosomal survey of 375 plants from 275 different populations suggests that the recorded numbers are stable within the genus and that infraspecific euploidy and aneuploidy are uncommon. These chromosome numbers can be arranged numerically, with morphological and limited cytogenetic substantiation, into four euploid series of x2 = 9, 10, 11, and 12. Of these four groups of species, the x = 10 series is the largest and morphologically most diverse. This consideration, along with additional evidence from the morphology of sterile disc ovaries, suggests that x = 10 is the ancestral chromosomal base in Melampodium. A comparison of morphological and cytological data from the closely related genera, Acanthospermum and Lecocarpus, indicates that the latter are probably on a common base of x = 11. Present day distributional patterns of all three genera support the hypothesis that x = 10 is the ancestral base for the entire complex.  相似文献

The white-rayed species complex ofMelampodium has been treated by various authors as containing one, two, or three species. A re-evaluation of the taxa in this complex by use of Chromatographic profiles of methanolic leaf extracts from numerous populations over the range of the group has revealed three distinct patterns which, along with morphological and ecological data, provide support for the recognition of three species within the group. Distributional analysis of previously and newly reported chromosome counts of 157 plants in 99 populations shows tetraploid races ofn = 20 in bothM. leucanthum var.leucanthum andM. cinereum var.cinereum to be located primarily in central and south central Texas but locally intermixed with diploid races. Interpretation of morphology, meiotic configurations, and chemical profiles confirms that these cytotypes are autopolyploid in origin and should not be given formal recognition. All data are used to interpret evolutionary relationships, and it is believed thatM. leucanthum var.argopkyllum may closely resemble the progenitor of the entire complex.  相似文献

Simulations suggest that molecular clock analyses can correctly identify the root of a tree even when the clock assumption is severely violated. Clock-based rooting of phylogenies may be particularly useful when outgroup rooting is problematic. Here, we explore relaxed-clock rooting in the Acer/Dipteronia clade of Sapindaceae, which comprises genera of highly uneven species richness and problematic mutual monophyly. Using an approach that does not presuppose rate autocorrelation between ancestral and descendant branches and hence does not require a rooted a priori topology, we analyzed data from up to seven chloroplast loci for some 50 ingroup species. For comparison, we used midpoint and outgroup rooting and dating methods that rely on rooted input trees, namely penalized likelihood, a Bayesian autocorrelated-rates model, and a strict clock. The chloroplast sequences used here reject a single global substitution rate, and the assumption of autocorrelated rates was also rejected. The root was placed between Acer and Dipteronia by all three rooting methods, albeit with low statistical support. Analyses of Acer diversification with a lineage-through-time plot and different survival models, although sensitive to missing data, suggest a gradual decrease in the average diversification rate. The nine North American species of Acer diverged from their nearest relatives at widely different times: eastern American Acer diverged in the Oligocene and Late Miocene; western American species in the Late Eocene and Mid Miocene; and the Acer core clade, including A. saccharum, dates to the Miocene. Recent diversification in North America is strikingly rare compared to diversification in eastern Asia.  相似文献

Aim  To analyse phylogeographic patterns in the four species of Hypochaeris sect. Hypochaeris , evaluating possible areas of origin and the microevolutionary processes that have shaped their morphology, genetics and distribution.
Location  Western Mediterranean area.
Methods  We applied amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers to a total of 494 individuals belonging to 82 populations of Hypochaeris arachnoidea , H. glabra , H. radicata and H. salzmanniana to determine population structure.
Results  Populations with the largest proportion of private and rare AFLP fragments were found in Morocco. This region was consequently inferred to be the ancestral area for H. arachnoidea , H. glabra , H. radicata and H. salzmanniana . The Guadalquivir River (southern Spain) was inferred to be an effective dispersal barrier for H. glabra and H. radicata. The Strait of Gibraltar was inferred to be a somewhat weaker barrier than the Guadalquivir River for H. radicata and a much weaker barrier for H. glabra . The main barrier for H. salzmanniana coincides with the extension of the Rif Mountains to the Atlantic coast in Morocco, and the Strait of Gibraltar is a much weaker barrier for this species. Hypochaeris arachnoidea appears to have originated in the Atlas Mountains.
Main conclusions  The highest levels of genetic variation in La Mamora forest ( H. glabra and H. salzmanniana ) or the adjacent central Middle Atlas ( H. arachnoidea and H. radicata ) in Morocco suggest that these areas were a centre of origin of Hypochaeris sect. Hypochaeris . All three potential barriers – the Guadalquivir River, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Rif Mountains – have been important in shaping genetic diversity in species of section Hypochaeris .  相似文献

Orobanche is the largest genus among the holoparasitic members of Orobanchaceae. We present the first molecular phylogenetic analysis (using nuclear ITS sequences) that includes members of all sections of Orobanche, Gymnocaulis, Myzorrhiza, Trionychon, and Orobanche. Orobanche is not monophyletic, but falls into two lineages: (1) the Orobanche group comprises Orobanche sect. Orobanche and the small Near Asian genus Diphelypaea and is characterized by a chromosome base number of x=19 and (2) the Phelipanche group contains Orobanche sects. Gymnocaulis, Myzorrhiza, and Trionychon and possesses a chromosome base number of x=12. The relationships between these two groups and to other genera such as Boschniakia or Cistanche remain unresolved. Within the Orobanche group, Orobanche macrolepis and Orobanche anatolica (including Orobanche colorata) constitute two phylogenetically distinct lineages. Intrasectional structurings proposed by some authors for O. sect. Orobanche are not confirmed by the molecular data. In most cases, intraspecific sequence divergence between accessions, if present, is negligible and not correlated with morphological or ecological traits. In a few cases, however, there is evidence for the presence of cryptic taxa.  相似文献

Lactoris fernandeziana, monotypic in its family, is endemic to the cloud forests of Robinson Crusoe Island. Although there has been considerable study of the relationships of Lactoris, as a rare species and as a putative primitive paleoherb, little is known of its reproductive biology. Knowledge of the latter is essential for effective conservation programs. The species is gynomonoecious. The overall proportion of flowers is ∼1 female:1 hermaphrodite. The inconspicuous semipendulous green flowers, usually in mixed-gender inflorescences, do not produce rewards. Hermaphrodite flowers are herkogamous and protogynous. Pollen grains are shed from the extrorse anthers in permanent dry tetrads. There is a mean of 12879 tetrads per hermaphrodite flower. Both flower types bear an average of ∼18 ovules. The P/O (pollen/ovule) ratios imply facultative or obligate xenogamy, but hand pollinations show that Lactoris is self-compatible. No floral visitors were ever observed, but stigmata of open-pollinated flowers bore tetrads, and 64% of such styles had pollen tubes. Flowers enclosed in large mesh (1 mm) bags bore similar numbers of tetrads and pollen tubes. Thus, we conclude that Lactoris is anemophilous, a syndrome perhaps reflected by the P/O ratio. Low genetic diversity (isozymes and DNA) supports selfing and implies limited distance wind pollen dispersal. The small size of the island, the ± 1000 extant Lactoris plants, coupled with anemophily, self-compatibility, and pendant flower position, have yielded a geitonogamous system with high seed set and low genetic diversity. If inbreeding depression is expressed, it is in seed germination and seedling vigor, for Lactoris is very difficult to cultivate. For this species, effective conservation practices need to focus on habitat preservation and promotion of outcrossing.  相似文献

We analysed pappus characters in 31 of the c. 34 accepted Leontopodium spp. (edelweiss). Micromorphological pappus character states were useful for discriminating between individual species and intrageneric groups. The pappus differs in number, length, breadth, surface structure, colour and the tips of the bristles. Several features characterize single species, for example a unique fan‐like tip that is only found in L. franchetii. Leontopodium section Nobilia is supported by unusual pappus characters. Experimental evidence shows that the pappus of Leontopodium, previously thought to be caducous, is well suited for wind dispersal of the fruit. One clear trend is that species growing in sparsely vegetated, high‐altitude regions often have more numerous and longer pappus bristles, particularly on the female flowers.  相似文献

The predominantly allopatric species of the genusPicradeniopsis, P. oppositifolia andP. woodhousei, are distinct in morphological, in phenolic and terpeniod chemical, and in cytological aspects (n = 24 andn = 12, respectively). In an area of sympatry in northeastern New Mexico, interbreeding occurs frequently with the production of morphologically intermediate hybrids. Morphological and phenolic chemical data from 191 plants in 40 isolated parental populations and from 91 plants in four hybrid populations are of limited value in determining the nature of this hybridization, but meiotic configurations of 12II and 12I and low pollen viabilities of 1–11% in the hybrids indicate that they are all of the F1 generation (with one possible backcross). The absence of observed introgression, and therefore the absence of gene flow between the two taxa, strengthens the case for taxonomic recognition of two species in the genus. Comparisons of the morphology, phenolic and terpenoid chemistry, and cytology of parents and F1 hybrids suggest that the tetraploid,P. oppositifolia, has arisen by allopolyploidy from a cross betweenP. woodhousei and an unknown diploid species. An extrapolated morphological and chemical reconstruction of this putative diploid parent is advanced.  相似文献

Within the tribe Heliantheae of the Asteraceae, the genetic boundaries of the subtribe Melampodinae have recently been drastically revised by Stuessy. The number of genera within the subtribe has been reduced and new generic groupings have been established. The present study correlates the distribution of sesquiterpene lactones found in these genera with the newly revised subtribal boundaries. The genera Acanthospermum, Melampodium, Polymnia and Sigesbeckia produce predominantly melampolide-type sequiterpene lactones. Limited chemical data support Stuessy's removal of the genera Desmanthodium, Clibadium and Ichthyothere from the subtribe Melampodiinae. The occurrence of melampolide-type sesquiterpene lactones in members of the genera Tetragonotheca (Helianthinae) and Enhydra (Ecliptinae) indicate a possible position of these genera in the Melampodiinae.  相似文献
